Overview
Hard (Technical) and Soft Skills
Managers are leaders of their personal lives and leaders of people. They are leaders in the pivotal sections of their company and of production output. Every Production Supervisor and Mine is, in effect, responsible for millions of Rands per month.
Often the critical position and role of Production Supervisor and Miners in the success of a mine are underestimated. Their training and development tend to focus primarily on competency driven skills.
We know the buzzwords - we pay lip service to things like character, trust, passion, purpose, Emotional Intelligence, collaboration and innovative thinking, but they really don't value them in the same way they value technical competency.
Any organisation that over-weighs the importance of technical competency, fails to recognise the considerable and often-untapped value contained in the whole of the person. It's the cumulative power of a person's soft skills (personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people), the sum of the parts if you will, that creates real value. It's not what a person knows as much as it is how they are able to use said knowledge to inspire and create brilliance in others that really matters.
The Practical Supervision programme for Production Supervisors and Miners has as its aim to develop these leaders as a whole person and to enable them to develop their teams toward optimum performance. It should be kept in mind that all leaders and teams have blind spots. The question is what is being done about these blind spots? This is partly what this intervention is about.
