Interpersonal relationships have been determined as one of the most important aspects of leadership development courses. Interpersonal refers to how a person relates and communicates with other as opposed to an intrapersonal relationship which is the way in which an individual interacts and relates to themselves.

One of the features of these types of leadership courses is empathic communication. Empathic communication works in two ways. The first is whether you as a leader can feel empathy towards your defined group of follower. The second key to empathic communication in leadership development courses is how your followers feel about you.

The best leaders inspire a feeling of worthiness and respect in their followers that these people will then try to emulate. However, a leader who is not empathetic to his follower’s feelings about him or her will not be able to determine whether this level of respect has been gained or not. They will also not be able to determine if and when they may lose respect in the eyes of their followers through a specific deed or action.

Of course direct communication also plays a pivotal role in leadership development courses. This too is a two-way street in which the leader needs to not only be able to relate a message across meaningfully and clearly but must also be able to listen to what other people have to say. Effective communication in the work place can either make or break a business and will also result in a more positive working atmosphere for employees.

A sense of trust must also be established in a leader/follower relationship. It is very important to understand that trust is earned and not given freely and the easiest way to establish trust in a relationship is to first give trust. Make sure that you delegate responsibilities to your employees and then leave them to get on with the task they have been given to do. If something does go wrong, don’t criticise but rather give constructive thoughts, ideas and facts that can rectify the matter.
